If There’s Something Strange In the Neighborhood…

Filed under: Uncategorized — jennifer @ 10:55 PM

Who you gonna call?

Was anyone else as obsessed with the Ghostbusters as I was? I’m watching Ghostbusters 2 as I write this post and I just finished the first Ghostbusters. Thanks AMC for showing these truly classic movies back to back.

More than the movies, I really loved the cartoon show.

It was probably the only thing my brother and I could agree on! We even had the episodes on video, knew all the words by heart and watched them until the tape wore out.

I also have to admit that I was slightly jealous when my mom got my brother a Ghostbusters’ jumpsuit. Oddly enough, I remember that she bought it at Nordstroms. I’m not sure if it was my love of jumpsuits or Ghostbusters that incited the jealousy… Anyway, he was really stylin’, complete with proton pack and trap! Hey, I just figured out my Halloween costume for this year – all the instructions are right here!

As a final thought, Ghostbusters came out in 1984. Ghostbusters 2 came out in 1989. Ghostbusters the cartoon show ran from 1986-1991. That officially makes me OLD!

And a second final thought… get your proton packs ready…Ghostbusters 3 is officially in the works!

Good Bye Billy Mays

Filed under: Uncategorized — jennifer @ 10:11 AM

Wow, I opened up my Google News link in my browser this morning to clear out the 900+ news articles and the first thing I saw was “TV Pitchman Billy Mays Found Dead at Fla. Home.” Say what?? Of all the people who died this week, I think I was shocked most by this! I find Billy Mays incredibly hilarious and I watch Pitchmen almost every week. There aren’t many details yet – just that no foul play is suspected. Maybe it was the Sham Wow guy.

Everyone (especially celebs), please stop dying.

Ed – it wasn’t that big of a surprise that you died. You were pretty old and sick and it’s just unfortunate that the last thing everyone will remember about you is that your house was being foreclosed on.

Farrah – again, not a surprise. There was even a TV special about how sick you were. We were just counting down the days

MJ – even though I’m 95% sure that you really are dead, I’m sure you are one of those celebrities that people will see in random places all over the world for years to come (a la Elvis). You were only 50, but I’m not that surprised that you died. You always look pretty frail and I never thought you’d be someone who lives to a ripe old age. Speaking of which…what happened to your good friend, Elizabeth Taylor?? Haven’t seen her in a while… are we sure she’s still alive?

My Addiction

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — jennifer @ 1:05 PM

You read that right. Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, I have an addiction. It’s not to alcohol or drugs or porn. It’s not even to shopping, although some might argue otherwise. As with many addictions, I didn’t even realize it was a problem until I came home and saw this…

L to R: Sweet Soy Sauce, Black Bean Garlic Sauce, Sriracha, Maggi, Hoisin Sauce, Soy Sauce, Dumpling Sauce, Sesame Dressing, Fish Sauce, Sweet Chili Sauce, Oyster Sauce, Sesame Oil

Oh Asian sauces, why must you tempt me so? I probably single handedly keep Lee Kum Kee in business. They have addicted me with their salty, MSG-laden goodness. And the thing is, I don’t even own 10% of the sauces out there. Have you ever been down the sauce aisle at 99 Ranch? It’s INSANE!

I just picked up the Sweet Soy Sauce today and although I wasn’t planning on eating it right now, I had to have a taste. It tastes exactly as it sounds…a sweet, soy sauce. But the consistency is more syrupy, like an aged balsamic vinegar. I was perusing some food blogs earlier and found a “recipe” for silken tofu with sweet soy sauce and fried onions. For some reason it just struck a chord with me – the idea of cold, silky tofu on a 97 degree Walnut Creek day just sounded amazing. I also picked up a jar of fried onions (which of course, I also had to taste as soon as I got home) and it was like a less salty version of those French’s onions that you eat on green bean casserole. DELISH! Now, I regret not picking up that jar of fried garlic…

Well, the tofu is going to have to wait because while at 99 Ranch, I picked up an assortment of dim sum, as well as roast and bbq pork and my clock is telling me that it’s LUNCH TIME!!

Just Awesome

Filed under: Uncategorized — jennifer @ 3:13 PM

Everyone knows that basketball players are generally the most stylish athletes out there and I guess Yahoo! Sports felt the same because they just posted this article on the Best and Worst Dressed of the 2009 NBA Draft

The above is Jonny Flynn, the #6 draft pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He didn’t win “Best Dressed,” but rather the “Just Awesome” award. He was personally my favorite of all the players mentioned in the article. I love the dusty pink color with the grey and are those tab front pants? Tres chic! Bonus points for the coordinating pocket square. I just feel like his tie could have been a smidge longer. I don’t really know about ties, but don’t they usually reach your waistband? Maybe it’s because he’s tall? lol

This article just got me thinking…what other well-dressed athletes are there?

Ah Roger Federer. It’s kind of unfair because he’s like Anna Wintour’s little protégée, but LOOK AT HIM! He has a really relaxed style, but put together style and he never looks like he’s trying too hard. I also like his his hair. It just looks like it’s so soft and shiny and I bet it smells nice.

What list of well dressed athletes would be complete without David Beckham. God he is so hot. And I just loves me a man scarf, especially when paired with a velvety moss green jacket. Yum!

Dwyane Wade has it going on! It’s hard to pull off a light colored suit and a hat without looking like a Colombian drug lord (do they only dress like that in my mind, chomping on a huge cigar?), but DWade does it with finesse.

I’m sure there are loads more people I could mention, but I don’t feel like thinking or looking for more pictures right now. Who do you guys think are some stylin’ sports stars?

Gai Pad Krapow (Thai Basil Chicken)

I just made this recipe for the 2nd time and boy is it yummy! I’ve always been intimidated of making Thai food at home because the flavors seem so complex and who knows what exotic ingredients you might need? Well turns out it really isn’t that difficult at all! What I love about Thai food is that you get salty, sour, spicy and sweet all in one dish and that is definitely something you find here. So make yourself some Gai Pad Krapow and imagine that you’re on a tut-tut in Bangkok instead of suburban Bay Area.

Gai Pad Krapow (from Serious Eats)

-serves 2-

2 T vegetable oil
2-3 chilis, finely chopped (use Serranos for a mild heat, Thai Bird’s Eye chilis for a medium heat)
1 large shallot, finely sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/3 lb. green beans, trimmed, chopped into 1 1/4 inch lengths
1/2 lb. ground chicken
2 T fish sauce
2 t sugar
1 bunch basil, leaves only

To Serve:
Steamed rice
Fried eggs, 1 per person (optional)
Fresh lime wedges

1. Heat the oil over high heat in a wok or large frying pan. When you can see waves forming in the hot oil, add the chilis, shallots, and garlic and stir-fry until golden, about 30 seconds.
2. Add the green beans and stir-fry until cooked but still crunchy, 3 to 4 minutes
3. Add the ground chicken, using a wooden spoon or spatula to break up the meat into small pieces. Stir fry until chicken is cooked through.
4. Add the fish sauce and sugar to the pan, stir to distribute. Taste, and add more fish sauce or sugar, if desired.
5. Reduce heat to medium-low. Add the basil leaves and stir-fry until completely wilted. Remove from heat.
6. Serve with steamed rice, fried egg and nam pla prik or lime wedges.

Notes: I’ve made this with both ground chicken and ground turkey. I think pork would work well also. DO NOT sniff the pan after adding the chilis – the chili fumes will infiltrate your nasal canal and make you cough like a maniac. Yes, the fish sauce smells uh… pungent, but crack the window open and go with it. The flavor is amazing.

When Persistence Doesn’t Pay Off

GRRR I am so pissed. Does anyone else know about Gilt Groupe? It’s a website with major discounts on designer clothes/accessories/home goods. They have little boutiques that pop up every day and they send you an email about who is featured and you have to sign on at 9 AM (noon eastern) ON THE DOT in order to get the good stuff. If you want to sign up, please let me know because then I get a credit when you buy stuff.

So imagine, my surprise when I checked my email at 9:11 AM this morning and saw this…

Yes, that is the Marc by Marc Jacobs Joelle dress that Blair Waldorf wore to the White Party in Season 2 of Gossip Girl. And it was marked down to $158! I was seriously shitting myself, I wanted it so BAD!

I sign onto Gilt (11 minutes late) and my size is already in another member’s cart, but not sold out. I have loads of work to do today but I take a few (okay, many) precious minutes madly refreshing the page trying to get the dress in my cart. 40 minutes later, that beotch finally bought the thing and I get a message that is sold out. I’m crushed…defeated.

It reminded me of a few months ago when Gilt had an Herve Leger sale. I was there at 8:59 AM waiting to see what they had and I got a super cute bandage dress into my cart! I was so psyched. I kept refreshing my cart so that the 10 minute hold timer wouldn’t run out. After about an hour of serious contemplation, I decided that even though the dress was hugely marked down, I couldn’t really justify such a big hit to the bank account for something that is super trendy and honestly, kind of 2008.

So that’s it. It’s 10 AM, I’m crazy busy today, but I always have time for online shopping. 🙂

I Want to Live Amongst the Beautiful People

Has anyone else seen the show Beautiful People based on the book of the same title by Simon Doonan? First of all, I absolutely ADORE Simon Doonan. He is so cute and hilarious (oh and creative, natch). I think Simon and Jonathan Adler just make the most adorable couple. I wish I knew them so I could go to their house for dinner parties.

The show is a bizarre mix of AbFab, Malcolm in the Middle and Married with Children. The stories all revolve around young Simon and his Princess Diana-obsessed friend, Kylie (really Kyle, but he loves Kylie Minogue), who want to grow up and move to London to live amongst the beautiful people.

Kylie really steals the show. He is so cute! Apparently he played Billy Elliott in London and it really shows because he is super talented.

I don’t want to give too much away, but you can watch all the episodes here.

Game, Set, Match!

Look at my new tennis racquet (racket? whatevs). Isn’t it beautiful? I’m starting tennis lessons (again) and I had to go buy myself some new equipment. I splurged this time on a “nice” racquet and hopefully I will take good care of it. Of course, I failed to take in to consideration the fact that the whole thing (and especially the grip) is white and will probably get dirty in 10 minutes and make me cry.

I love tennis because it is really the only sport you can play in a dress. I guess there is also figure skating, but I don’t think you really get to wear those sparkly outfit unless you’re competing. I really don’t need to wear a sequined leotard to fall on my ass.

Anyway, here are some cute tennis outfits I’ve found

This Stella McCartney for Adidas dress is TOO CUTE FOR WORDS!! LOVE LOVE! MUST HAVE!
Picture 7
Another Adidas. Nice and sporty, I could see Maria Sharapova wearing this.
Okay so this one isn’t super practical, what with the sequins and all. But I would feel like Zelda Fitzgerald playing in the Hamptons

Reality Overload

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — jennifer @ 10:53 PM

I watch too much reality TV. Seriously, I think it’s becoming a problem. Let’s review what I’ve watched so far today… (please don’t judge)

8:00 – 9:00p I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here – Sarina got me addicted to this show and I was really hoping that Sanjaya would go all the way, but unfortunately he got booted tonight. I also ruined it for Sarina by texting her when he was kicked off, not knowing that she was 20 minutes behind, watching on Tivo. lol

9:00 – 9:30p Superstars – Boring! I was impressed by the caliber of the athletes (Terrell Owen, Lisa Leslie, Robert Horry, Bode Miller), but who the hell are the “celebrities?!” I didn’t recognize any of these people. Do we really need to see “celebrities” and athletes running an obstacle course? Me thinks not. Sonia – you really need to get on ABC’s butt about improving their summer lineup. Superstars, I Survived A Japanese Game Show and Wipeout – seriously?! SERIOUSLY?!

9:30 – 10:00p various before finally settling on Best Thing I Ever Ate – All I really remember is that they featured Chinese BBQ Pork Buns and now I’m craving dim sum…

10:00 – 10:30p NYC Prep – Nice attempt at reality Gossip Girl, Bravo. Okay, not to be rude, but couldn’t they find some more attractive kids? The one who wants to go to Harvard looks like a ghost and don’t get me started on the cross-eyed looking one. I think I’m going to have to pass on this and wait for the next installment of Real Housewives of _____.

10:30 – 11:00p Kendra – I’m surprised, this show is actually pretty cute. And for some reason she is less annoying when she’s on her own. I disliked Kendra the most on Girls Next Door, mostly because I thought she was a big boobed bimbo with an awful laugh. But, Kendra and Hank seem like a genuinely in love couple. I just really really hate the theme song/opening sequence thingy which looks like it cost $5 to produce.

I may have watched some other things this afternoon, but whatevs. My new secret daytime obsession is Hannah Montana. Oh the joys of working at home!

BTW, who saw Jon & Kate Plus 8 last night? Those poor kids. I only started watching the show about a year ago and I totally fell in love with it. I think the turning point for me was when I realized that every episode was filled with product placements. Okay, Kate, we know you love your Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer. You don’t have to say it a billion times. We also know that you like to stay at the Canyons in Utah and you just ordered 4 Crooked Houses. Even watching reruns is pretty painful now that you know what an evil beotch Kate is and what a sniveling loser Jon is. Sad.

I’m Back Bitches!

Filed under: Uncategorized — jennifer @ 9:15 PM

Thanks to my dear dear friend, Frau Zaftig, I have been inspired to start blogging again! Wow, you readers are sooo lucky 🙂

She reminded me of old blog, which I updated on and off for over 3 years! Craziness. I was surprised because I actually thought I deleted my old blog, but I guess I didn’t do it right and that just goes to show you “delete” doesn’t always mean DELETE on the internets. I’m glad my old blog was still there though because reading through my old entries really brought back a lot of memories and it made me realize that I might want to remember some of the stuff that’s going on now as well.

Well now is as good of a time as any to start blogging, so here it goes!
