Restaurant Review: Jollibee

Look at that face. How can anyone say no to that? Inspired by Frau Zaftig’s article on Jollibee in the Philippine Star, I finally made my first trek to the McDonald’s (or is it KFC?) of the Philippines.

Unlike in NYC, we’ve had Jollibee in SoCal for quite a while. I’ve seen that one on Azusa Blvd for many years and although I was initially curious about the cute sign, I just never got around to going. Now one has opened up in Chino Hills, of all places, and my normally picky brother gave it the thumbs up.

After an appointment on Thursday morning, I called my bro to see if he wanted anything from Jollibee – he texted me back asking for a chicken meal and a $1 burger. The first thing I noticed about JB is the very friendly service. The lady at the counter kept calling me ma’am, which was simultaneously annoying and nice. I wanted to try the chicken and the spaghetti, but since my brother specifically asked for the burger, I thought it might be worth trying. I ended up ordering 2 3 piece chicken meals, 2 Yum burgers ($1.29), and 1 peach mango pie for the heck of it. The total was just under $20 – not cheap, but there was tons of food. Here’s a pic of the chicken (after I ate a piece!) and the burger

Sorry for the blurry pics. The chicken was awesome – light, crispy and fresh. I got one order with fries and the other with rice. I originally wanted mashed potatoes, but there was a 10 minute wait, and in the end, I was happy with the rice. Gravy + Rice = Deliciousness! I love that the chicken comes with gravy. Gravy makes everything better. The burger was not very good though. It was like a McDonald’s happy meal burger, but with a mess of Thousand Island on top. Maybe some of their fancier burgers are better? The pie was pretty good and sweet.

I just realized that those Filipinos really know what they’re doing with fried chicken. This is actually my 3rd time eating Filipino fried chicken – once at Max’s, then at Goldilocks and now at Jollibee. It’s still second to Roscoe’s and maybe even to Popeye’s, but if I ever feel like chicken and spaghetti, I’ll be heading down to Jollibee.
